Hamza enters world junior event final
In a thrilling encounter at the World Squash Federation’s Junior Squash Championship, Hamza Khan created history by becoming the first man from Pakistan since Aamir Atlas Khan to reach the final in 15 years. The gripping semi-final match against French [9/16] seed Melvil Scianimanico left spectators at the edge of their seats.
Khan displayed exceptional footwork and a swashbuckling style, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. However, Scianimanico showcased his resilience and determination, fighting back with incredible grit to save a match ball in the third game and eventually leveling the tie with consecutive wins in the third and fourth games.
The tension escalated in the fifth game as Khan earned three match balls at 10-7. Unfortunately, he couldn't capitalize on the opportunities due to rushed attacks, putting himself on the verge of a shocking defeat when Scianimanico earned a match ball of his own at 11-10.
Nevertheless, Khan held his nerve and approached the game more patiently, perfectly timing his attacks to secure a nail-biting 13-11 victory in the final game.
In the men's final on Sunday, July 23, 2023, Hamza Khan will face Egyptian [3/4] seed Mohamed Zakaria, who, at just 15 years old, became the youngest-ever finalist in the men's competition. Zakaria showcased a dominant performance in his semi-final, defeating compatriot and [5/8] seed Salman Khalil in straight games.
Although Zakaria may lack the pace and power of his opponents, his deft touch and tactical understanding proved to be the decisive factors in his victory over Khalil, who had previously caused an upset by defeating top seed Jonah Bryant.
The final promises to be an exhilarating clash between the talented Hamza Khan and the young sensation Mohamed Zakaria, as both players vie for the prestigious title in the Men's Junior Squash Championship.
