Justin Bieber's departure from Instagram yesterday rocked the Belieber world hard, but it is definitely not the first from a celebrity of that stature.

Over the years, many celebs have fled social networks due to negative comments, flagged photographs or just exhaustion with the apps.

While we all wait with great anticipation for any online sign from the Biebs, we decided to see how long celebrities really stay off Instagram or Twitter after announcing their departure. To that end, we offer up our amateur analysis on the average length of time celebrities stay off of our timelines.

Brief goodbyes

For some, it's a dramatic announcement that only lasts a short time.

For Demi Lovato, it lasts a day.

The singer quit Twitter and Instagram earlier this year. It was unclear exactly what triggered her departure, but she made a triumphant return exactly 24 hours later.

Celebrities like Rob Kardashian and Chelsea Handler have abandoned Instagram too, only to return two to three weeks later. Kardashian kept his account up but deleted all his images. Handler on the other hand (who had been in a tiff with Instagram over NSFW images) left her Instagram for Twitter, writing "You can now find my dogs and my breasts on Twitter only where my followers have the right to choose what they say."

Jennifer Love Hewitt also announced she was leaving Twitter for a bit, citing negative people and threats as her reason for leaving. Turns out she came back to it about a month later.

Long farewells

And then there are those who stick to their guns—at least for a bit—when it comes to abandoning social media.

It's unclear whether or not Rihanna deleted her Instagram account or it was removed by the company, but after six long months of no badgalriri pics, she returned to the world with a cute doodle of her and Instagram holding hands.

Miley Cyrus last a bit longer when she deleted her Twitter account in 2009 and gave us all a rap to explain her reasoning behind her move. She returned over a year later to promote her 2011 tour and has used it ever since.

Pink raised her glass to Twitter and bid it adieu in December 2012. It wasn't until almost three and a half years later she did come back to the platform.

But her record is beat by John Mayer, who left Twitter for almost 4 years following a controversial interview with Playboy. He is still barely around on the app and has publicly said it doesn't suit him anymore.

The king of all social media goodbyes is Ed Sheeran. The singer announced that he would take a break from social media because he found himself "seeing the world through a screen" rather than his eyes. It's been a little over eight months since he's posted on Twitter or Instagram, but autumn is approaching and so our eyes are peeled for a return.

Conclusion

Turns out, time spent off social media is quite varied. But almost everyone comes back.

Celebrities leave apps like Twitter and Instagram for a myriad of reasons—most often because of comments. But while some dipped out from the online platforms for a quick break to recharge offline, others took it a lot more seriously.

Pink and John Mayer's lengthy absences, paired with Demi Lovato quick delete, really throw off the average, but with them included, it seems about a year away from Twitter or Instagram is the standard break.

Ages, professions and schedules all clearly impact the analysis as well, but for now, it's anyone's guess when Justin Bieber will return.

Until that day comes (if it ever does), we wait with bated breath.
