Meghan Markle along with her fiancé Prince Harry, and Prince William and Kate Middleton appeared in public together for the first time to discuss their charitable work with the Royal Foundation.

"It started as a small idea with Harry and I scratching our heads and going how can we do something that's going to help us in the future," said the Duke of Cambridge, describing the genesis of the foundation.

The Royal Foundation is the umbrella organisation that facilitates William, Harry, and Kate's charity work, including the mental health charity Heads Together and the conservation campaign United for Wildlife.

"It's all about tackling the cause and not the symptom," Harry said of charitable foundations. "Otherwise you're just putting a Band-Aid on the problem." (He used the Americanism for "plaster" there -- maybe his fiancée's influence? But still a good point about charity.)

Markle will now be joining the Royal Foundation's work, having previously worked for charities helping women and girls.

"You'll often hear people say, 'well you're helping women find their voices,'" said Markle, "and I fundamentally disagree with that because women don't need to find a voice. They have a voice. They need to feel empowered to use it, and people need to feel encouraged to listen."

She said that thus far she has been going around and listening to different people and organisations so that she can be well-informed about charitable work in the UK so that in a few months she can "hit the ground running."

Hooray for team-work!
